Another issue on which the EU is keen to cooperate with Azerbaijan is neighboring Iran. While the EU is seeking to thwart what it fears are Teheran’s ambitions to build a nuclear weapon, Azerbaijan is seeking backing for its efforts to improve the standing of the up to 30 million Azeris living in Iran. Aliyev told EU officials today that Baku is unhappy that the Azeri language is banned from schools and the media in Iran.

Tuesday’s first witness told the court that he and other men from his village had surrendered to Iraqi soldiers after being promised an amnesty.
Qahar Khalil Mohammed, a Kurd, then told the court how they were lined up and shot by the soldiers. He said he survived despite several wounds, but 33 other people from his village died.
