Slow search for victims of Minn. bridge collapse

. “These are horrible images but within each of those images is a story,” Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said. “That car you see tangled in the wreckage is someone’s cousin, brother or husband. … Thank God this wasn’t worse.”

City officials said the search and subsequent clean-up would take several days. Searchers used sonar and engineers lowered the river level to aid the effort.

UK ‘misled’ over police shooting

. An inquiry into the shooting dead of a Brazilian electrician mistaken for a suicide bomber has found that a senior police officer knew of the mistake, but deliberately kept the information from his superiors and misled the public.

Jean Charles de Menezes was shot seven times in the head by police on an underground train in London in 2005.

Serbia sees hope for Kosovo deal: The widest possible autonomy in the world

. The province of Kosovo, currently part of Serbia, has been governed by the UN since the war ended in 1999.

Mr Jeremic said it could be given “the widest possible autonomy in the world” to meet Albanian independence demands.

Kosovo’s majority Albanian population wants independence from Serbia.

Daunting task to unify Darfur rebels

. The aim at talks starting on Friday in Arusha, Tanzania, will be to get roughly a dozen rebel factions to agree on a common platform for peace talks with the government and to decide where and when those will happen.

The challenge has taken on new importance since the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday approved deployment of the joint U.N. and African Union force to quell violence in Darfur.

Bridge collapses into Mississippi

. A freeway bridge over the Mississippi river has collapsed during the evening rush hour, sending cars into the water.
An entire span of the four-lane I-35W bridge in the city of Minneapolis fell into the river at 1805 (2305GMT).

Local officials said three people had died. Some people were stranded on parts of the bridge still standing.

Saudis ‘ready to sit’ with Israel

. Israel and its US ally have said Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia who do not have ties to Israel should involve themselves in talks with the Jewish state as a goodwill gesture.

“We welcome this initiative,” Prince Saud said at a news conference with US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
