Petraeus says Iran stoking Iraq violence

. The U.S. military commander in Iraq has stepped up accusations that Iran was stoking violence in Iraq and said Tehran’s ambassador to Baghdad was a member of the Revolutionary Guards Qods force.

Washington accuses the force, the elite unit of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, of inciting bloodshed in Iraq and of training and equipping militias who have attacked U.S. troops.

Japan’s satellite reaches lunar orbit

. The mission - four years behind JAXA’s original schedule - comes as China is planning to launch its own lunar probe. That country’s minister of defense and technology told China Central Television in July all was ready for a launch “by the end of the year.”

China’s Chang’e 1 orbiter will use stereo cameras and X-ray spectrometers to map three-dimensional images of the lunar surface and study its dust.

China continues to lead Japan in Asia’s space race, however.

Turkey explores uranium reserves for future nuclear power stations

. Turkey has concentrated its uranium exploration efforts within the country in order to eliminate the possibility of becoming dependent on external uranium resources for the three nuclear power stations it plans to build by 2015 and so it is not adversely affected by price hikes.

Since the unit cost of mining operations for the 9,120-ton uranium reserves which were previously discovered in Turkey is higher than worldwide prices, the Mineral Research and Exploration Institute (MTA) decided to conduct new exploration surveys to discover more economical uranium deposits. During the last two years, the MTA has found new uranium deposits in Kırşehir, Nevşehir and Ankara

Iraq Body Count: “A Very Misleading Exercise”

. The mainstream media are continuing to use figures provided by the website Iraq Body Count (IBC) to sell the public a number for total post-invasion deaths of Iraqis that is perhaps 5-10% of the true death toll.

As we recently reported, only a handful of media outlets covered a new ORB poll revealing that 1.2 million Iraqis had been murdered since the 2003 invasion. BBC Online provided a rare example:
