On 30 December, at least 50 and possibly hundreds of men from Iran’s Ahwazi Arab minority were arrested as they attended a memorial at the Hamzeh mosque in Ahvaz City, the capital of the south-western Khuzestan province. They were reportedly detained following an attack by members of the police and Bassij forces. Some or all may be prisoners of conscience, detained solely for exercising their right to freedom of expression and association.

US presidential race set to begin

. After months of furious political campaigning, the 16 candidates will plunge into the state-by-state battle to choose two presidential candidates from the 16 currently in the race for the two parties’ nominations.

The Democratic caucus begins at 6:30pm (0030 GMT), with Republicans starting 30 minutes later. Results could begin to appear within an hour or two.

New Turkish citizenship bill discussed in parliament

The Turkish Parliament yesterday began debates on a drafts for a new Turkish citizenship law, with focus placed on the importance of learning adequate Turkish for people who want to become citizens of the Turkish Republic. According to the bill, people wanting to apply for Turkish citizenship must have resided for at least 5 years without gaps in Turkey, must not have any communicative diseases, and must speak adequate Turkish.
