59 deputies to face prosecution in Turkey

After the formation of the next Parliament, 59 deputies including former Democrat Party leader Mehmet Ağar will lose their immunity and could face trial in Turkey’s judicial system.
There were 251 immunity cases pending against Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputies in the 22nd-term Parliament. Some 33 deputies who were not elected on July 22 from the AK party will be able to be judged after the removal of their immunity.
Kerim Yıldız, Mahfuz Güler, İbrahim Köşdere, Mehmet Kılıç, Remzi Çetin, Sabri Varan and Halil Ürün are all AK party deputies who will lose their immunity. In those deputies’ cases, they will be tried on charges including “false papers,” “misconduct in office,” “defamation of office” and “illegal land allocation.”
In the Republican People’s Party (CHP), 15 deputies will go to court to be judged. Naci Aslan, İsmail Değerli, Memduh Hacıoğlu, Hakkı Ülkü, Muharrem Toprak, Fikret Ünlü, Mehmet Siyam Kesimoğlu, Sefa Sirmen and Muharrem Kılıç are CHP deputies who will lose their immunity. Sirmen will be judged over the tender of Yuvacık Dam. Other CHP deputies will be judged on charges such as “misconduct in office,” “embezzlement” and “false papers.”
Some deputies from the Motherland Party (ANAVATAN) and the Democrat Party (DP) will also have to appear in court. Former leader Mehmet Ağar will have to face questions over the supplying of weapons to Abdullah Çatlı and false papers to Yaşar Öz in the Susurluk incident, a fatal 1996 car accident that involved a right-wing terrorist, a former police chief and a parliamentary deputy.zaman
