A best-selling author of books attacking Turkey’s ruling party was detained on Friday over suspected ties to a shadowy ultranationalist group, sources close to the investigation said.

Ergun Poyraz was detained in the early morning at his home in Ankara and flown to Istanbul for questioning by police.

Poyraz is suspected of having links to an ultra-nationalist group which came to light with a police raid last month on a house in Istanbul in which 27 hand grenades and several detonators were seized.

Police have detained several suspects, among them retired army officers, and reportedly seized more weapons, explosives and secret military documents in subsequent raids.

Poyraz is the author of several non-fiction books attacking Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and senior members of his Justice and Development Party (AKP) that have made the bestseller lists.

The AKP, which opponents accuse of having a secret Islamist agenda to install an Iranian-style regime in mainly Muslim Turkey, won a resounding victory in Sunday’s early legislative elections to rule for a second five-year term.turkishdailynews
