A group of Azerbaijani experts tripped to Azerbaijan on Thursday for holding talks with Turkmen colleagues on the status of the Caspian Sea.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov leads the delegation.
Diplomatic sources in Baku said the talks, which open on Friday, will address the range of sea relations of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, including the delimitation of the two countries’ national sector in the Caspian, security and navigation.
Baku is optimistically waiting for results of the talks.
The very fact of the resumption of the bilateral consultations on the Caspian is seen in Azerbaijan as “encouraging”.
The talks broke off a few years ago because of the sides’ differences on delimitation methods and the determination of the median line, and disputes over several offshore deposits.
The chairman of the public association “The Caspian: Partnership for Future”, Rustam Mamedov, told reports that Turkmenistan in a short prospect could join the Azerbaiani-Russian-Kazakh talks on the Caspian Sea. This would help resolving at least partially the issue of ownership of Kyapaz deposit.
The deposit, which is located at junction of the two countries’ national sea sectors, is a subject of disputes between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.
The Turkmen side calls it Serdar.bakutoday
