Today if one asks who is happiest with the Nationalist Movement Party’s (MHP) success in entering Parliament, the answer will be unanimous: Abdullah Gül.
No doubt, this presidential candidate of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) with a failed bid behind him took a deep breath yesterday morning while reading about the promise by the MHP’s leader Devlet Bahçeli that they will be present in Parliament during the presidential election rounds.
“If the issue is evaluated on the basis of meeting the conditions of having 367 deputies in Parliament, then the MHP will be present there,” Bahçeli said in an interview with daily Milliyet yesterday.
Bahçeli’s words are a clear message that the MHP will pursue more affirmative policies in Parliament compared to the Republican People’s Party (CHP). Is it because this party devoted itself to the democratization of the country or is it hard to convince the newly elected deputies to risk losing their seats by blocking Parliament?
Of course, the answer will be clear when Parliament restarts its legislative activities in the near future for further harmonization with the European Union. The MHP’s two diplomats, Deniz Bölükbaşı and Gündüz Aktan are known to be very skeptical toward EU membership and are expected to be very efficient in their efforts to block Parliament’s work on these issues.
No worries for the DTP
Not only the amendment of the infamous article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code that limits freedom of speech but the re-opening of the Halki Seminary, Foundations Law, more cultural rights to minorities etc. will be on the governments and Parliaments agenda in coming months. Will the MHP prove that they will improve democracy in the country or will it take its place beside the CHP?
But not only this. What makes this current Parliament differ from the previous one is the presence of the 23 independent candidates of the Democratic Society Party (DTP). There are worries that these two groups will fight in Parliament over discussions on terrorism and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
But Bahçeli dismissed such worries in his interview yesterday. “Let me tell you our criteria about it. It is taking the oath in Turkish. We’ll have no problem with any body if they stay loyal to their oath. But if they violate their oath, they will find us standing in front of them. Not only for a DTP member but our word is valid for all deputies,” he noted.turkishdailynews
