. | Regarding news from Azerbaijani sources, there are more than 100 people arrested during the demonstration or before that. Many received letters or call by Iranian authority to not to join the demonstration. There is no clear number of arrested people due interrupted communication facilities and internet connection. It is usual to have connections, electricity and even tab water cut by government during demonstrations in Iran. |
Azerbaijanis are the majority in Iran, mainly in North part but spared all around the country so called Iran. They make up to 60% of Iran’s population.
However, in reality they are under Fars rule who call themselves Persian to use the benefit of Persian Empire (its existence disputed).
They banned the use of mother language by many nationalities living in Iran, like Turks, Baluchies, Turkmen’s, Arabs and Kurds. They also punish who want to ask for their right of having their historical names, culture and even identity. Saying “I am a Turk” will end in prison, torture and exile. They force all nationalities to accept that they are Iranians and their official language is Farsi! Also, they claim that people other than Fars’s are those who came recently following crucial attacks by Mongols or Arabs!
21st of February is International Mother Language day and been celebrated in many countries. But in Iran is different. This day been forgotten knowingly and all wanted to celebrate been threatened by police, many arrested and put in trial for breaching the law. It is helpful to know; even constitution of Iran allows people to have their language used in daily life, education and local media.
Interestingly, Iranian constitution indicates clearly that Farsi is one and the only official language for all who live in Iran; it is even pushed upon those who own their lands for over 10,000 years like Turks in Azerbaijan who have ruled Iran and nearby countries for over 5000 years. Turks did not use force to change people’s language or cultural behaviors, even they helped them to achieve their best.
On 21st of February, Azerbaijanis had protested against this discrimination. Police, Civil clothed forces and unofficial armed Basij forces in cities of Azerbaijan were in alert, they were there before the International Mother Language day and they are there now.
Before the celebration day, many students announced their hunger strike. Many political and cultural activities gave their support and all cities had their walls printed with national slogans.
