The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) is considering nominating a leading figure as its presidential candidate. Sabahattin Çakmakoğlu, deputy leader of the party and Mithat Melen, an Istanbul deputy, are potential candidates, daily Milliyet reported yesterday.

The MHP’s leader Devlet Bahçeli already stated his party’s position on the presidential elections and announced that they will be present in Parliament during the voting. Bahçeli also signaled that they will vote for their own candidate even though he or she stands no chance of being elected. The MHP did the same during the elections for Parliament speaker.

Besides Çakmakoğlu and Melen, Ertuğrul Kumcuoğlu and Gündüz Aktan are also being mentioned as possible candidates. But party officials say that Bahçeli is more likely to select Çakmakoğlu. Çakmakoğlu, a former defense minister, was the MHP’s presidential candidate during presidential elections in 2000 when Ahmet Necdet Sezer was elected.
