New MPs pledge oath to “democratic, secular republic”

. New MPs are to approach the general assembly chair and swear to protect the ‘principles of Atatürk and a democratic, secular republic’. Those whose oaths cannot be heard or who misread the oath will be warned by the head of parliament and asked to repeat it.


The head of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, new MPs and parliament bureaucrats will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony today at the Atatürk Memorial in Ankara. The general meeting starts at 15:00, opening with a minute of silence and the Turkish National Anthem, followed by an induction ceremony.

President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Chief of General Staff Gen. Yaşar Büyükanıt and the commanding officers of the army will not be attending the meeting, which is expected to continue until midnight tonight.hurriyet
